KCRA 3 - Ruckus Erupts Over New Air Jordans
Police were called Wednesday to Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento to disperse a rowdy crowd that turned out to buy new Nike Air Jordan sneakers. More than 1,000 shoppers showed up in hopes of buying a pair of the $175 kicks during a midnight release.
But things quickly got out of hand, leading mall security to call city police for help in dispersing the unruly crowd.
"There was a SWAT team, fighting, helicopters," shopper Ashley Merriman said. "It was insane." Arden Fair Mall officials said another attempt will be made at 8 a.m. to sell the shoes.
Meanwhile, a handful of lucky buyers got their hands on some Jordans at Sunrise Mall when the shoes went on sale at about 6:30 a.m.
Other shoppers seeking the shoes were waiting in line early Wednesday outside of the Foot Locker store at Downtown Plaza in Sacramento.
